About Design Concept
Backed by Simatai Great Wall, GubeikouGuesthouse faces Wuling Mountain of Miyun, Beijing. In an advantageousenvironment, the site is located on the top of a village with woods and severalviewing platforms around. The original building contained two courtyards withan independent entrance each: the forecourt was Farm House; and the back one hadbeen wasted. Design scheme considers the whole building into one, creating 9 guestrooms, 2 kitchens, 1 activity room and 1 staff room. This design remains the originalstructure of those two courtyards as well as the materials and forms tointegrate the building into the environment. You have to walk along a winding mountain road to arrive to a wide platform, and then to getthis Guesthouse. Meanwile, there are three platforms in different levels onsite, creating a kind of relationship with the scenery and the Guesthouse.
The building is divided into several blocks by functions. The front and rear courtyards are connected sometimes and disconnected at other times for guests’ flow in this scheme. The service flow, basically on the first floor and one side of the second floor, gets access through two platforms. Before entering the courtyard, the view are blocked by several wooden piles. And the outer wall uses local stones. These two materials create a different feeling from the inside grey bricks.
The layout creates large public space, narrow private space and transition space. The one between those two courtyards is dinning space with an important position and public property, which connects the front and rear yards and dominates the site.
With an objective of open design, a fully sliding door has been applied into the front and back of the dinning space. When it is closed, those two courtyards are independent; otherwise, a full view will be displayed. In this design scheme, roofs are in picturesque disorder to respect the mountain due to the surrounding. Also, gaps in between of the roofs divide the building’s background view into different pieces as well as make the whole Guesthouse even lighter.
